Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve
Just 12 km east of Chesley, visitors can take advantage of the Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve in Grey County. A network of trails maintained by the Saugeen Field Naturalist Club, this remarkable, mature maple and beech forest offers visitors a rare glimpse into Ontario’s natural past. Many of the trees are 250 to 300 years old, and tower over 100 feet in height, a profusion of woodland wild flowers and many species of birds. The rustle of Maple leaves in the wind far above your head and the smell of wild leek below your feet are only a few of the delights you will encounter at Kinghurst Forest.
The Federation received the Kinghurst Forest (240 hectares) through a landmark bequest from Howard H. Krug, a keen and well-respected conservationist. In December 1997 the Federation purchased and additional 40 hectares of the Kinghurst Forest, bringing this magnificent natural retreat to it’s current size.
For avid Birders, there are excellent opportunities to spot interior forest birds such as Scarlet Tanagers and many species of Warblers.
